Background and Resources
BACKGROUND
One important way to contribute is to share your thoughts regarding other's work. Not only can you help them, but in critiquing another's work you may well gain insights in how to improve your own.

Critiquing requires the resolve to read and understand what the other person means before responding. Start with the author's implicit or explicit questions. As you critique, try to visualize how feasible, useful, and important the project would be. If you see problems, try to find constructive solutions.

Think of what Walter Kaufman calls the dialogical mode of engagement , neither in awe of the other's work nor dismissive of it, but rather engaged with it on its own terms.

ON-LINE DIALOGUES
Provide feedback on others' work using the web board. Some guidelines:

  • If you are not the first to respond, try to choose those who have not received any response yet.

  • Don't worry that you don't know the area well; write from what you know. Your perspective as a novice in the area can be useful as well.

  • Try to think of responses that you would appreciate receiving, which are supportive, but also with concrete ideas, questions, and suggestions for improvement, and pointers to related work.
