II.A. Develop a Collection of Digital Resources for the Inquiry Page (and the selection policy statement associated with it) on:

--Inquiry-based Teaching and Learning, OR
--Inquiry-based Learner Assessment Strategies.

http://www.inquiry.uiuc.edu/bin/update_unit.cgi?command=select&xmlfile=u10711.xml

The aim of this creative activity is to help you gain a greater understanding of the processes involved in developing a selection statement for an online collection and implementing it by identifying and/or creating a small set of electronic information resources that meet the criteria in your selection statement. The Inquiry Page has been discussed among its users as the logical place to house several collections of information resources, such as those identified above. Think about where and how your set of resources may be gathered; they may appear at some particular location on the IP, for example, or they may be collected and presented through an Inquiry Unit.

II.G. Develop an Inquiry Unit Deposit Page

http://www.inquiry.uiuc.edu/bin/update_unit.cgi?command=select&xmlfile=u10830.xml

How can individual Inquiry Units be deposited into sub-collections, either within the Inquiry Page or at external sites? The aim of this creative activity is to help you gain a greater understanding of the processes involved in creating a collection for a particular user community, developing selection criteria, and getting resources into collections.

Investigate issues and practices related to selection and assessing quality. How do Merlot, MSTE, and GEM and other such organizions accept items into their digital collections? If we want to deposit Inquiry Units there, we need to develop a process to do so and explain it to both Inquiry Unit creators and the people who run Merlot, MSTE, and GEM.

Design a collection deposit page for the Inquiry Page that contains orienting and explanatory information you think is crucial. You may simply create a mock-up of such a page in HTML, a word processor, any other software you wish, or just on paper. If you have the expertise, you can actually try creating a live form.

II.F. What Usage Policies does the Inquiry Page Need?

http://www.inquiry.uiuc.edu/bin/update_unit.cgi?command=select&xmlfile=u10829.xml

We've heard from people attending Inquiry Page (IP) workshops that it is hard to get a handle on what the IP is, has, and does, and how it treats them as users who may access and/or contribute IP material themselves (hard to believe, huh?). What sort of information do they need about the IP and the IP user community? What info do they need about issues that concern them as IP contributors, such as privacy and how material is archived?

The aim of this creative activity is to help you gain a greater understanding of the processes involved in creating a usage policy for an online collection.

Write an analysis of usage policies needed for the IP. What is the range of policies that might apply? Which types of policies do you think the IP needs? How should these policies be crafted and implemented? Or, write a Usage Policy for the Inquiry Page that contains orienting and explanatory information you think is crucial.

This task can be seen as a process of analyzing the IP site, investigating examples of policy, and recommending policies to the Inquiry Page developers group.

II.H. Write an Analysis of the Ontology of Resources Collected on the Inquiry Page

http://www.inquiry.uiuc.edu/bin/update_unit.cgi?command=select&xmlfile=u10832.xml

The IP can be viewed as a hodge-podge collection of different kinds of resources (e.g., articles about inquiry, presentation slides prepared by IP members, event listings) that has grown over time with no overarching plan. The Inquiry Group would find a complete description of what currently exists helpful in planning for how better to organize and provide access to this growing body of digital information resources. This creative activity is akin to producing a collection inventory.

II.I. Analyze and Critique the Open Directory Project (dmoz) as a Source of Collected Resources related to Inquiry-Based Learning

http://www.inquiry.uiuc.edu/bin/update_unit.cgi?command=select&xmlfile=u10833.xml

Go to the "Open Directory Resources" list of links to webpages related to inquiry that appears in "Other Resources" on the IP. Here you will find a collection of resources that has been assembled by volunteers. Chip Bruce currently serves as the volunteer editor of this section of the Open Directory. Anyone can submit the URLs for webpages they think should added to the list; these show up as email messages to Chip and he then either accepts or rejects them.

How effective do you think the Open Directory process is for building an online collection of digital resources related to inquiry? What are its strengths and weaknesses? How does it compare to other web directories, like Yahoo, in terms of the quality and relevance of the resources it assembles? of its ease of use for IP users? How good are the descriptions provided for each resource? How does it compare to other collection building strategies for the IP?

Is the Open Directory Project's collection of resources about inquiry-based learning an effective research tool for users of the Inquiry Page?
