Rationale of the Unit
Developing a collection requires us to first develop the data structure that underlies the information organization system for the collection. It is imperative to find and use the most suitable data structure for the collection by considering the nature of the collection itself.

This Capstone Project is a wrap up for the previous modules in the LIS 380 course and tries to advocate the use of Visual Resources Association Core Categories version 3.0 for the digital version of ALA Archives collection. Some additional elements for local implementation are also given in the discussion.

Dialogues, Discussions, and Presentations
I did have discussion with various groups of people in developing this module and it's also based on my previous modules for the LIS 380 course. In general, the following groups of people has helped me a lot in shaping my knowledge in the development of an information organization system:
  1. University of Illinois Archives staff
  2. Patricia Lawton (plawton@uiuc.edu) - LIS 450RO Professor
  3. American Library Association related people
  4. LIS 380 Professors and Instructor
  5. My classmates who gave me feedback on my modules

Please refer to my previous modules for complete list of discussions conducted.

Assessment, Related Questions, and Story of the Unit
In doing this Capstone Project I found out that we don't have to stick to one particular metadata scheme. Rather, we should use the most suitable scheme that best organize our collection and enhance the retrieval of the collection. It is better to use several different schemes for different collections than trying to use one single scheme for all types of collection.

This Capstone Project goes in tandem with my Final Project for LIS 450RO (Representing and Organizing Information Resources) . I spinned-off assignments and projects between the two courses. I found it very useful since both complimentary to each other. Lessons learned from one course enhance my learning process in the other course and vice versa.

I found the learning process to be enlightening and fun since it relates much to my interest in developing digital collection related to historical/cultural archives.
