Read the following "Vision Statement" for the Paseo Boricua Community Library (PBCL) project:
The Paseo Boricua Community Library is a participatory action research project representing a collaboration among teachers, students, researchers and local volunteers (http://www.prairienet.org/pbclp/ ). The project began in January 2003. It centers around the work of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center in Chicago’s Humboldt Park, and includes participants from the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science.
We share a vision of establishing a stable base of collaboration around the following goals: Develop a rich understanding of what a community of learners is, of how a community works; Support Paseo Boricua goals of self-actualization and community revitalization; Help people learn about and gain experience with participatory action research; Create a web presence for Paseo Boricua; Help people learn how to organize and manage collections of books, newspaper articles, CDs, posters, Puerto Rican art, etc.; Learn how to be part of a community going global around collections and information processes; Get someone who is not a white middle-aged woman interested in Library and Information Science; Learn about collaboration in a larger online setting; and Make concrete contribution to knowledge and practice related to the digital divide; give practical skills. Create a cultural corridor along Division Street - an innovative and distinct global city where people come together like a beautiful quilt to learn about Puerto Rican culture through its dance, music, paintings, poetry, etc. We want to use memory to inspire people to rethink the future. 1.
